How to Get Your Itemized Medical Bill
Why bother?
A regular hospital "statement" only shows lump-sum totals. An itemized bill breaks every charge down by code, quantity, and price. That's the key to spotting errors and overcharges. Once you get your itemized bill, you can upload it onto our website.
1. Call the billing office
Look for "Patient Financial Services" on your statement or the hospital website.
"Hi, I need my itemized bill for account #____, date of service ____."
2. Be specific
Use the magic words: "itemized bill with CPT/HCPCS and revenue codes" (it's also called a UB-04 or detailed statement).
3. Put it in writing
Send a short email or secure-portal message so there's a paper trail:
"Please send a PDF of my itemized bill for account #____. A secure email or upload to the portal is fine. Thanks!"
4. Ask for a PDF
Paper copies can take weeks. A PDF usually arrives within days and is easier to search.
5. Set a reminder
Under federal rules, hospitals have 30 days to deliver. If you haven't received it after two weeks, follow up politely and mention the 30-day deadline.
6. Escalate if needed
Still no luck? Ask for the hospital's Privacy Officer or Patient Advocate and remind them of your right to access your own records.
